Description

A duck wandering in the gardens of Chatsworth House.
A beautiful place to visit if you are ever in the area. I think some parts of the movie The Duchess was filmed here.

You should check out Castle Howard and Witley Court. Its a tale of similarity and contrast. For example both homes were damaged by fire. However, Castle Howard was repaired over a period of decades while Witley Court was allowed to fall into a ruined state because the own Sir Herbert Smith could not get the insurer to pay for the full extent of the damage that was caused by the fire in 1937. What he and the insurer should have done was to agree to put a temporary roof on the damaged section of the building, along with replacing the the windows and doors to make it weather tight until funding was available to repair the interior. Instead he sold the property in 1938 to a group of people who stripped the building to a ruined shell. Now it's under the protection of the British Government's Guardianship program. I would love to see this building get restored to a habitable home once again. But when I read that part of the house was a bat colony, that pretty much kills that idea because they are a protected species in the UK. Thus, they would need to be moved to another location.

Chatsworth House could have easily had been demolished around that time frame had it had been in the hands of a Duke who was just like Sir Herbert Smith.
